A long layover doesn't have to mean hours in a terminal chair. Most major hub airports offer fast city access — and a 6–12 hour layover can become a genuine half-day travel experience. Here's what's possible.
A long layover doesn't have to mean hours in a terminal chair. Most major hub airports offer fast city access — and a 6–12 hour layover can become a genuine half-day travel experience. Here's what's possible.
Singapore Changi (6+ hours)
Singapore's excellent public transport makes a city visit genuinely easy. MRT to the city center: 30 minutes, S$2.50 (€1.70). Free Singapore Tourism Board-organized transit tours are also available for passengers with 5.5–24 hour layovers — book at the airport on arrival.
The Jewel Changi complex within the airport is worth 2 hours on its own if you'd rather stay.
Istanbul IST (5+ hours)
Istanbul is one of the world's great cities and the airport is efficient. Metro to Gayrettepe (center): 35 minutes, €2. From there, Istiklal Street, Galata Tower, or Karaköy waterfront are all within 15–20 minutes. Hagia Sophia and the Grand Bazaar are 40–50 minutes from the airport.
Turkish Airlines operates a "Touristanbul" free layover tour service for passengers with 6–24 hour layovers on connecting Turkish Airlines flights — includes hotel accommodation for overnight layovers.
Amsterdam Schiphol (4+ hours)
Direct train to Amsterdam Centraal: 17 minutes, €5.20. Walk the canal ring, visit the Rijksmuseum (3 hours), or take a canal boat tour. One of the most rewarding airport city combinations in Europe.
Tokyo Narita (6+ hours) / Haneda (4+ hours)
Narita to Tokyo center: 60+ minutes. Haneda to Tokyo: 30 minutes. Given Tokyo's complexity, 6 hours at Narita is a stressful city visit — better to stay near the airport (Narita old town is very pleasant, 15 minutes by bus, and completely tourists-free). Haneda offers a much more viable Tokyo day trip.
Dubai DXB (6+ hours)
Metro to the mall and downtown area: 35 minutes, Dh8 (€2). Dubai Mall, the Burj Khalifa viewing deck (book ahead), and the Dubai Creek Gold Souk are all manageable in a long layover. The Dubai airport also has its own free transit hotel rooms for longer waits.
Doha Hamad (6+ hours)
Doha city center is 30 minutes by taxi (Uber works well) or metro. The Museum of Islamic Art, the Souq Waqif spice market, and the Pearl artificial island are all compact and manageable. Qatar's Oryx Airport Hotel inside the terminal is excellent for rest layovers.
Frankfurt FRA (4+ hours)
S-Bahn to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof: 15 minutes, €5. Walk the Römer (old town), cross the river to the Sachsenhausen cider district, or visit the Städel art museum. Very manageable half-day.
Seoul Incheon (6+ hours)
Free transit tours organized by Visit Korea and Korean Tourism Organisation for passengers with 5–24 hour layovers on the same airline. Without a tour: AREX train to Seoul Station takes 43 minutes (€9). Myeongdong or Gyeongbokgung Palace are easy first destinations.
General Rules for Layover City Trips
- Check visa requirements — some nationalities require transit visas even for short layovers
- Leave at least 3 hours before your connecting flight departs (more for large airports like Narita or Dubai)
- Store your carry-on luggage in airport left-luggage or coin lockers before leaving the terminal
- Have your boarding pass and passport easily accessible for re-entry security
- Download offline maps before leaving the terminal — you may not have local data
A well-executed layover is one of travel's great small pleasures.
