Singapore Changi (SIN)
Changi is in a category of its own. Terminal 1-4 each have distinct personalities; the Jewel Changi complex (connecting T1–T3 via an indoor garden with the world's tallest indoor waterfall — 40 meters through a glass dome) is extraordinary. Features include:
- Free Singapore city tours for transit passengers with 5.5+ hour layovers
- Rooftop swimming pool (T1)
- Butterfly garden and cactus garden
- Free 24-hour movie theater
- Direct MRT to the city in 30 minutes
Changi is not just the world's best airport — it's a destination some people fly through on purpose.
Tokyo Haneda (HND)
Haneda consistently scores highest among Japanese travelers — impeccably clean, efficient, with a traditional Japanese market (Edo Market) in the international terminal selling quality crafts and food. The observation deck looks directly out at the runway with excellent nighttime views of the tarmac and Tokyo Bay. Ramen, sushi, and soba restaurants to a very high standard.
For Tokyo access, Haneda beats Narita significantly — 30 minutes to Hamamatsucho via monorail vs. 60+ minutes to Tokyo from Narita.
Hamad International Airport, Doha (DOH)
Qatar's flagship hub is architecturally spectacular — the Urs Fischer yellow bear and moon sculpture in the departures hall, a 300-meter indoor garden atrium, swimming pool, gym, day rooms, and art installations throughout. Qatar Airways' Business and First Class lounges (Al Safwa) are among the finest in aviation. The airport's own hotel (Oryx Airport Hotel) is within the terminal.
Incheon International, Seoul (ICN)
South Korea's main airport has Korean cultural experience centers, free cultural performances, a transit hotel, spa, golf, an ice rink, and casino. The K-Style Hub showcases Korean culture for transit passengers. Free city tours for long layovers. Multiple excellent Korean restaurant options.
Zürich Airport (ZRH)
Switzerland's flagship airport is efficient, clean, well-designed, and has excellent duty-free shopping. But its best feature for travelers is the location — Zürich city center is 10 minutes by direct train. Making Zürich a deliberate stopover for even 6 hours gives you a half-day in one of Europe's finest cities.
Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS)
Schiphol is one airport terminal, well-designed, with the famous Rijksmuseum annex (free entry, genuine Dutch masters in a small gallery airside), a casino, a library, and some of Europe's best airport shopping. The train to Amsterdam Central takes 17 minutes.
Practical Tip: Using Layovers
Airports score differently on:
- City access: How quickly and cheaply can you leave the airport?
- Airside comfort: What can you do without going through security again?
- Lounges: Is there a paid lounge (Priority Pass, Dragon Pass) worth using?
For long layovers (6+ hours), leaving the airport is almost always better than staying — especially in Singapore, Seoul, Tokyo, Doha, and Amsterdam where city access is fast and cheap.
