You've probably heard claims like "always book on Tuesdays" or "prices drop at midnight." Here's what the data actually shows.
You've probably heard claims like "always book on Tuesdays" or "prices drop at midnight." Here's what the data actually shows.
The Tuesday Myth
The idea that Tuesdays are cheapest to book originated when airlines released fare sales on Monday nights and competitors responded with matching fares on Tuesday mornings. By Tuesday afternoon, the cheap seats were gone.
Does it still apply? Partially. Airlines do still sometimes launch sales early in the week, and you can occasionally find slightly better prices on Tuesday and Wednesday. However, the effect is much smaller than it used to be — real-time dynamic pricing has reduced predictable patterns.
Verdict: Day of the week to book matters less than most people think.
Best Day to FLY (Not Book)
The data here is stronger. The cheapest days to fly are typically:
- Tuesday, Wednesday — least popular travel days
- Saturday — surprisingly often cheap (travellers avoid it for business trips)
Most expensive days to fly:
- Friday (business travellers returning home)
- Sunday (leisure travellers returning)
- Monday (business travellers going out)
The difference between flying on a Thursday vs. a Tuesday on the same route can easily be €30–€80.
How Far in Advance to Book
This is more important than what day you book on.
Domestic/short haul: 4–10 weeks ahead Medium haul (within region): 6–12 weeks ahead Long haul (intercontinental): 10–20 weeks ahead
Booking too far in advance (6+ months for leisure travel) isn't necessarily optimal — prices start high, drop in the booking window, then rise as the flight fills. The sweet spot is usually in the 4–12 week range depending on route.
What Actually Moves Prices
- How full the flight is — the biggest factor
- Time until departure — prices rise sharply in the final 2–3 weeks
- Competing flights — routes with more competitors stay cheaper longer
- Seasonal demand — school holidays, festivals, events
- Fuel prices — airlines pass costs through
Practical Recommendation
Set a Google Flights price alert on your route 3–4 months before travel. Check it a few times a week. When the price is at or below the historical average (Google shows this graph), book it. Don't obsess over what day or time to click "buy."
