Cheap Flights to Mexico
From North America
- Aeromexico, United, American, Volaris, Vivaaerobus — all compete heavily on US/Canada–Mexico routes
- Volaris and Vivaaerobus are Mexico's budget carriers, offering fares as low as $29–$59 one-way
- Spirit and Frontier fly to Cancún from multiple US cities — good for beach holidays
- New York → Cancún: from $200 return with budget carriers
- Miami → Cancún: from $120 return
From Europe
- Iberia, Aeromexico: Direct flights Madrid/Paris → Mexico City (MEX) from €450–€700 return
- KLM, Lufthansa, Air France: Via hubs, similar pricing
- Aeromexico often has good deals on transatlantic routes
Domestic Mexico Transport
Mexico has excellent domestic airlines:
- Aeromexico: Main carrier, premium service
- Volaris: Best budget option, fares from MXN 499 (€25) one-way
- Vivaaerobus: Very competitive, especially northern Mexico routes
- VivaAerobus/Interjet: Check current status as Interjet went bankrupt in 2020
ADO buses: For shorter distances, ADO luxury buses are safe, comfortable, and much cheaper than flying — MXN 200–600 (€10–€30) between cities like Cancún→Playa del Carmen→Tulum.
Budget Travel in Mexico
Mexico is genuinely affordable:
- Street food tacos: MXN 15–30 (€0.75–€1.50) each
- Restaurant comida corrida (set lunch): MXN 80–150 (€4–€7.50)
- Hostel bed: MXN 200–400 (€10–€20)/night
- Budget hotel in Oaxaca, Mérida, or San Cristóbal: MXN 500–800 (€25–€40)/night
- Cancún and tourist areas: Significantly more expensive
Safety Considerations
Mexico's safety situation varies dramatically by region. Tourist areas (Oaxaca, Yucatán, Mexico City neighbourhoods like Condesa, Roma, Coyoacán) are generally safe. Avoid driving at night, use ride apps (Uber works well in major cities), and exercise normal urban awareness.
Best Budget Destinations
- Oaxaca: Incredible food, culture, colonial architecture. Very affordable.
- Mérida: Gateway to Yucatán. Safe, affordable, excellent food.
- Mexico City (CDMX): World-class museums, food scene, nightlife. Mid-range budget.
- San Cristóbal de las Casas (Chiapas): Mountain town, colonial, very cheap.
- Tulum: Eco-chic, Instagram-famous — prices have risen sharply. Less budget-friendly now.
