Kyushu, Japan's southernmost main island, is one of the country's most rewarding and undervisited regions. It has active volcanoes, Japan's finest hot spring resort, the birthplace of tonkotsu ramen, subtropical gardens, and a distinctly warmer, more relaxed atmosphere than Honshu.
Getting There
A JR Pass covers the Kyushu Shinkansen. From Osaka to Hakata (Fukuoka) takes 2 hours 15 minutes by Nozomi (not covered) or 2 hours 45 minutes by Hikari (covered). Fly into Fukuoka (FUK) from Tokyo in 1 hour 40 minutes.
Fukuoka (Hakata)
Kyushu's largest city is one of Japan's most livable and least touristy major cities. Locals are friendly, the food is outstanding, and the vibe is decidedly more relaxed than Tokyo.
Food: Fukuoka is the birthplace of tonkotsu ramen — creamy pork-bone broth. Go to Ichiran Ramen for individual cubicle seating (the original location is here), or eat at the famous yatai food stalls along the Naka River. Hakata-style gyoza (small, thin-skinned, and crispy), mentaiko (spiced cod roe), and motsunabe (beef tripe hot pot) are all local specialties.
Sights: Ohori Park (pleasant lakeside park), Fukuoka Castle ruins, Hakata Machiya Folk Museum, Kushida Shrine.
Beppu
Japan's hot spring capital, with more hot spring sources than any other city in the world. The famous "Jigoku Meguri" (Hell Tour) visits eight dramatically different springs — a blood-red iron spring, a brilliant cobalt-blue spring, a crocodile farm heated by springs, and mud pools that bubble and heave like something from another planet. The baths themselves range from public bathhouses at €1.50 admission to full resort ryokan.
Aso: Active Volcano
Mt. Aso is one of the world's largest active calderas. When conditions allow (the active crater is frequently closed due to volcanic activity), you can walk to the smoking rim of Nakadake crater. The surrounding caldera — 18km across — is full of small towns, hot springs, and highland ranches. Aso is also one of the best cycling destinations in Japan.
Yufuin
A hot spring resort town in the mountains above Beppu. Where Beppu is busy and commercial, Yufuin is quietly beautiful — a lake (Kinrinko), a main street of craft shops and cafes, and first-rate ryokan surrounded by rice fields. Visit on a weekday to avoid the day-trip crowds from Fukuoka.
Nagasaki
An extraordinary city: Japan's main contact point with the outside world for 200+ years when Japan was otherwise closed, with a layered history including a significant Portuguese/Dutch/Chinese presence, a large Kakure Kirishitan (hidden Christian) community, and — as Hiroshima — a devastating atomic bomb history.
Nagasaki Peace Park and Atomic Bomb Museum (essential), Glover Garden (former British merchant's residence, city views), Shippoku cuisine (Nagasaki's unique fusion of Japanese, Chinese, and Dutch food traditions), Dejima island (the Dutch trading post, reconstructed).
Kagoshima and Sakurajima
Kagoshima faces Sakurajima — an active volcano that erupts multiple times per year, dusting the city in volcanic ash. Locals carry umbrellas for ash rather than rain. The contrast of this modern city with the constantly smoking island across the bay is surreal. A short ferry to Sakurajima offers hiking on lava fields and close views of the volcano. From Kagoshima, ferries reach Yakushima island (ancient cedar forests) in 2–4 hours.
Practical Tips
- The JR Kyushu Rail Pass (3 or 5 days) is good value for exploring the island
- Beppu is best as an overnight stay rather than a day trip
- Fukuoka → Beppu → Aso → Yufuin → Nagasaki → Kagoshima is a classic 7-day loop
- The weather in Kyushu is milder than Honshu — a good winter destination
Kyushu rewards travelers who skip it on their first Japan trip but come back specifically for it.
