The Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) is one of travel's most famous products — unlimited travel on most JR trains including shinkansen (bullet trains). But with recent price increases, is it still good value?
Current JR Pass Prices (2025)
- 7-day pass: ¥50,000 (approx. €300)
- 14-day pass: ¥80,000 (approx. €480)
- 21-day pass: ¥100,000 (approx. €600)
Prices increased significantly in 2023. This changed the value calculation for many itineraries.
Is It Worth It? Break-Even Analysis
Classic itinerary: Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka → Hiroshima → back
Individual shinkansen costs:
- Tokyo → Kyoto: ¥13,320 (€80)
- Kyoto → Osaka: ¥570 (€3.50) — short trip, not really shinkansen-worthy
- Osaka → Hiroshima: ¥9,960 (€60)
- Hiroshima → Tokyo: ¥18,040 (€108)
Total: ¥41,890 (€252) — less than the 7-day pass (¥50,000).
However, add:
- Airport transfers (Narita Express or Haruka from Osaka airport)
- Day trips (Nara, Nikko, Hakone, Miyajima)
- Other JR trains within Tokyo/Osaka
With a full week of travel and day trips, the 7-day pass can easily break even or save money.
When the JR Pass Is NOT Worth It
- If you're staying in one or two cities only
- If your itinerary is mainly within Tokyo
- If you plan to use AirBnB in cheap suburban areas (local trains are not covered)
IC Card Instead
For travel within cities and on non-JR lines, load an IC card (Suica or Pasmo) with yen. These cards work on Tokyo Metro, Osaka Metro, buses, and even convenience stores.
How to Buy
Purchase the JR Pass before arriving in Japan from authorised overseas sellers. Buying in Japan is now possible but at higher prices. Many travel agencies and online sellers (JR Pass official site, Japan Experience, etc.) offer it.
The Bottom Line
For a 7–14 day trip involving multiple cities (Tokyo–Kyoto–Hiroshima corridor), the JR Pass remains good value. For short trips or city-focused stays, skip it and pay individual fares or use IC cards.
