Japan Autumn Foliage Guide: Where and When to See Koyo

Autumn in Japan rivals spring cherry blossom season for sheer beauty. The Japanese tradition of koyo — viewing the changing leaves — draws as many visitors as hanami, and for good reason: the reds, oranges, and golds of Japanese maples set against ancient temple architecture is extraordinary.

When Does Autumn Foliage Peak?
The foliage front moves from north to south, opposite to cherry blossoms:
- Hokkaido (Daisetsuzan): Mid-September — Japan's earliest autumn
- Tohoku (Towada, Bandai): Early-mid October
- Nikko and mountain regions: Mid-late October
- Kyoto, Osaka, Nara: Mid-late November (peak typically November 15–25)
- Tokyo: Late November to early December
Best Koyo Spots
Nikko (Tochigi Prefecture) Arguably Japan's finest autumn scenery — the ornate Tosho-gu shrines framed by maples, the cedar avenues, and Ryuzu Waterfall surrounded by crimson leaves. Nikko peaks in mid-late October, 2 weeks earlier than Kyoto.
Kyoto Every temple in Kyoto is transformed in autumn. Key spots:
- Eikan-do Temple: Famous for its momiji maples, lit up at night during the koyo illumination season
- Tofuku-ji Temple: A sea of maples visible from the Tsuten-kyo Bridge
- Arashiyama: Red maples along the river and bamboo groves
- Yoshimine-dera (mountain temple, less visited): Sweeping valley views of autumn color
Nara Kasuga Primeval Forest in mid-November. Isuien Garden with deer wandering through autumn maple gardens. Often less crowded than Kyoto for the same landscapes.
Daisetsuzan (Hokkaido) Japan's first and wildest autumn foliage, beginning on the volcanic peaks in mid-September and descending through the valley by early October. The ropeway on Asahidake provides access to alpine koyo above the treeline.
Lake Towada (Aomori) A crater lake surrounded by beech forests. The Oirase Stream gorge, flowing from Lake Towada, is a 14km forest walk with waterfalls and rapids under a canopy of autumn color. Extremely photogenic and surprisingly uncrowded.
Korankei Valley (Aichi) A river valley near Nagoya with 4,000 maple trees — one of central Japan's best autumn spots. The evening illuminations are spectacular.
Night Illuminations
Many famous temples and gardens hold special evening openings (nokyo) during koyo season with illumination of the autumn leaves. Major events:
- Eikan-do Temple (Kyoto): Late October–late November
- Tofuku-ji (Kyoto): November
- Rikugi-en Garden (Tokyo): Late November–early December
- Korankei Valley illuminations: November evenings
Photography Tips
The best light for autumn foliage photography is early morning (blue/golden hour) or overcast days — bright midday sun flattens the colors. Rain actually enhances autumn photography: wet leaves are more saturated and reflective.
Early morning visits to temples also avoid the crowds that pack Kyoto's famous spots from 10am onward.
Practical Tips
- Peak dates vary by 1–2 weeks each year depending on temperature — check japan-guide.com's real-time koyo maps in October
- Book accommodation in Kyoto for the third week of November months in advance
- If Kyoto is too expensive during peak koyo, Nara (40 minutes away) offers similar landscapes with cheaper hotels
- Combine Nikko (late October) with Tokyo for an excellent 2-week autumn itinerary
- The JR Pass is fully applicable during koyo season
Autumn foliage in Japan is the equal of cherry blossom season and deserves its own dedicated trip.
