The Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) is one of the most discussed travel purchases in Japan — some travelers swear by it, others say it's overrated. The answer depends entirely on your itinerary. Here's everything you need to know.
What Is the JR Pass?
The JR Pass is a rail pass available exclusively to foreign tourists visiting Japan on a "temporary visitor" visa. It allows unlimited travel on JR (Japan Railways Group) trains, including Shinkansen bullet trains (except the Nozomi and Mizuho express trains), JR buses, and some JR ferries.
Current Prices (2025)
Duration · Ordinary · Green Car (1st class)
7 days · €280 · €375
14 days · €445 · €600
21 days · €570 · €770
Important: Prices increased significantly in 2023. Calculate your breakeven point before buying.
When the JR Pass Is Worth It
Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka route: A single Shinkansen ticket Tokyo–Kyoto costs around €80–90 each way. Two round trips alone justify a 7-day pass.
Adding Hiroshima or Nara: If your itinerary includes Tokyo → Kyoto → Hiroshima → Osaka, a 7-day pass easily pays for itself.
Hokkaido or Kyushu excursions: The pass covers the full Shinkansen network including routes to Sapporo, Hakata (Fukuoka), Nagasaki, and Kagoshima.
When the JR Pass Is NOT Worth It
Staying in one city: If you're spending your entire trip in Tokyo, the JR Pass is useless. IC cards are far cheaper for urban travel.
Tokyo–Osaka only: If you're doing a simple Tokyo–Osaka one-way trip and nothing else, buying individual Shinkansen tickets may be cheaper or similar in cost.
Short trips under 7 days: For a 4–5 day trip in one region, individual tickets usually win.
How to Buy
You must purchase the JR Pass before arriving in Japan — it cannot be bought inside Japan (an exchange order system was discontinued). Buy from authorized agents like JRailPass.com, Klook, or your airline's partner site.
You receive an exchange order, which you swap for the actual pass at major JR stations (Narita, Haneda, Tokyo Station) upon arrival.
Tips to Maximize Your Pass
- Always take the Hikari Shinkansen (not Nozomi/Mizuho) — these are covered by the pass and only 10–15 minutes slower
- Reserve Shinkansen seats at no extra cost at any JR ticket office
- The pass covers the Narita Express (N'EX) from Narita Airport to Tokyo
- JR buses (including some scenic routes) are also included
- Use Hyperdia or the JR Pass app to plan routes
Regional Passes
If your trip is limited to one region, consider regional passes:
- JR Kansai Pass (Osaka/Kyoto/Nara/Kobe): €25 for 1 day
- JR Tokyo Wide Pass: covers day trips to Nikko, Hakone, Kamakura
- Hokkaido Rail Pass: good for Sapporo-focused trips
The JR Pass is one of travel's best deals for multi-city Japan itineraries. Run the numbers for your specific route before buying.
