Asia is not one destination — it's a continent spanning tropical beaches, Himalayan mountain ranges, monsoon forests, and world-class cities. The "best time to go" varies dramatically depending on where in Asia you're headed. Here's a practical breakdown.
East Asia (Japan, South Korea, China)
Japan
Best months to visit: March–May (cherry blossom season) and October–November (autumn foliage)
March–May is the most popular and most expensive time. Cherry blossom season (late March–early April) is genuinely spectacular but prices for flights and accommodation spike dramatically. If you can visit in late April after the peak or in May, you'll find better value.
Autumn (October–November) is arguably Japan's most beautiful season — red and orange foliage, cool temperatures, clear skies — with slightly less demand than cherry blossom season.
Cheap months: January and February. Cold, but manageable. Skiing in Hokkaido is exceptional. Flight prices drop significantly.
South Korea
Similar pattern to Japan. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–November) are ideal. Winters are cold but Korea handles it well, and fares are cheapest in January–February.
China
China's diversity means there's no single ideal season. Generally: avoid Chinese New Year (late January or February — the world's largest annual human migration makes travel chaotic and expensive), Golden Week (first week of October), and May Day holiday. These periods see massive domestic tourism that affects prices and availability.
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–November) are the best times for most regions.
Southeast Asia
Southeast Asia's main weather dynamic is the monsoon season, which varies by sub-region:
Thailand
- High season: November–April (dry season, particularly the south/islands)
- Low season (cheap): May–October (rainy season on the south coast, but the north and parts of the east coast are fine)
- Best value: May or October — edges of the season with good weather probability and lower prices
Vietnam
- More complex because the country runs north-south. The north and south have different wet/dry seasons.
- Hanoi/Northern Vietnam: October–April is dry season
- Hội An/Central Vietnam: February–August is driest
- Hồ Chí Minh City/South: November–April is dry season
- Best overall time: November–March covers most of the country well
Indonesia (Bali)
- Dry season: April–September
- Best value: November–March (some rain but usually manageable; significantly cheaper)
- Avoid: August in Bali — peak season, maximum prices and crowds
Philippines
- Best time: November–May (dry season)
- Typhoon season: June–October (higher risk, especially for the central and eastern islands)
South Asia
India
India's size means regional variation, but generally:
- Best time for most of India: October–March (post-monsoon, cooler temperatures)
- Rajasthan: November–February ideal; extreme heat from April–June
- Kerala/South India: December–March ideal
- Monsoon: June–September brings heavy rain to most of India
For flights: January–February offers some of the cheapest fares to India from Europe, as demand drops after the Christmas period.
Sri Lanka
- Two monsoon seasons affect different coasts. The west coast (Colombo, Galle) is best November–April. The east coast is best May–September.
- December–March is peak season and most expensive; May–September offers better value.
Flight Price Patterns for Asia
Cheapest months to fly long-haul to Asia from Europe:
- January (post-Christmas, lowest demand)
- February
- September (after summer peak ends)
- October
Most expensive months:
- July and August (summer holidays)
- Late December (Christmas and New Year)
- Cherry blossom season for Japan (late March–early April)
