Best Cherry Blossom Spots in Europe: Spring Festivals Beyond Japan

Japan doesn't have a monopoly on cherry blossoms. Several European cities have significant cherry blossom seasons that rival the hanami spectacle — with smaller crowds, lower prices, and combinations with other spring festivals. Here's where to go.

Germany: Higan Cherry Blossoms in Bonn
The Heerstrasse in Bonn's Nordstadt neighborhood has 300 Japanese cherry trees that form a pink tunnel of blossoms in late March to mid-April. Widely considered the most spectacular cherry blossom street in Europe. The trees were planted after World War II to rebuild ties between Germany and Japan.
Bonn also hosts the Kirschblütenfest (Cherry Blossom Festival) in the Old Town during peak bloom — a small but genuine celebration with Japanese cultural events and food stalls.
When: Typically late March–mid April. Peak lasts about a week.
Netherlands: Keukenhof Gardens and Beyond
The Netherlands is more famous for tulips, but the cherry blossoms are there too — Keukenhof Gardens near Lisse has Japanese cherry sections that bloom in early April alongside the tulip displays. Amsterdam's Vondelpark and the Amsterdamse Bos also have impressive cherry blossom areas.
The Japanese Garden at Clingendael (The Hague): Opens for only a few weeks each spring when the cherry trees bloom — a genuine Japanese garden transplanted to Holland, beautiful and relatively uncrowded.
Czech Republic: Prague in Spring
Prague's parks and riverbanks have significant cherry tree plantings. The Stromovka Park and Petrin Hill have the best displays — cherry blossoms on the hillside above the city, with views of Prague Castle behind.
The Sakura Festival (Sakura Matsuri) in Prague celebrates Czech-Japanese friendship with cultural events, tea ceremonies, and traditional performances during bloom season.
UK: Kew Gardens and Battersea Park
Kew Gardens in London has over 100 cherry trees and holds a Cherry Blossom Walking Tour during bloom season. Battersea Park is more spectacular for the sheer density of blossom — the Japanese Peace Pagoda area is particularly beautiful in early April.
Scotland's Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh has Japanese cherry trees that bloom in April, later than London due to the colder climate.
Belgium: Brussels Parks
Brussels' Cinquantenaire Park and Laeken Royal Greenhouse vicinity have cherry tree plantings. The Sonian Forest (Forêt de Soignes) east of Brussels has a wild cherry season in late April that fills the forest understory with white blooms.
The Blossom Route (Netherlands and Germany)
A cross-border touring route connects fruit blossom areas in Limburg (Netherlands) and the Lower Rhine valley in Germany. Thousands of hectares of apple, cherry, and pear orchards in bloom create landscape-scale blossom — better experienced by bicycle or rental car than any single city park.
Timing: The Dutch-German blossom route peaks in mid-April.
Switzerland: Lake Geneva Region
The shores of Lake Geneva between Lausanne and Geneva have significant cherry blossom plantings. The combination of spring blossom with snow-capped Alps behind the lake is genuinely extraordinary for photographs.
Lausanne's Parc de Valency and the gardens along the lake promenade are best in early April.
Tips for European Cherry Blossom
- European cherry blossom seasons are more variable than Japan's (temperatures fluctuate more) — check forecasts a week before your trip
- Blooms in Germany and Netherlands typically peak 2–3 weeks after Japan
- European festivals around blossom are smaller but more accessible than Japan's peak hanami season
- Combine blossom viewing with other spring content — cycling, outdoor markets, long evening light
Spring in Europe needs no enhancement, but cherry blossoms help.
