Southeast Asia has long been the go-to region for travellers who want their money to stretch as far as possible. But "budget" doesn't mean compromising on experience — some of the world's most remarkable landscapes, food, and culture sit in this part of the world.
Here are the best destinations for value-focused travellers.
Thailand
Thailand remains the most accessible entry point into Southeast Asia for most European and UK travellers. Bangkok is a world-class city with street food that rivals (or beats) restaurant meals costing ten times as much back home. The islands — Koh Lanta, Koh Tao, Koh Phangan — offer white sand beaches at a fraction of what you'd pay in the Maldives.
Chiang Mai in the north is a slower-paced base for jungle trekking, cooking classes, and temple visits. It's particularly popular with long-term travellers for good reason.
Budget: £30–50/day for comfortable travel, lower if you're intentional about it.
Getting there: Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang) is served from London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, and other European hubs by both full-service carriers (Thai Airways, EVA Air) and budget options like Norwegian on specific routes. Qatar Airways and Emirates often have competitive connecting fares.
Vietnam
Vietnam's value is exceptional. A bowl of pho costs under £1. A guest house in the Old Town of Hội An costs £15–25 per night. The country is long and thin, so travellers tend to move from north (Hanoi, Hạ Long Bay) to south (Hội An, Da Nang, Hồ Chí Minh City) or vice versa, experiencing radically different landscapes and cultures.
Budget: £20–40/day.
Getting there: Vietnam Airlines, Singapore Airlines, and several carriers fly via hubs in the Middle East and Asia. Watch for sales on connecting itineraries.
Cambodia
Cambodia punches above its weight for experiences. Angkor Wat — the largest religious monument in the world — is genuinely one of the most awe-inspiring sites on earth. Phnom Penh, while heavy with history, is an emerging food and arts city. The southern coast (Kep, Kampot, Sihanoukville) offers quieter beach alternatives to Thailand.
Budget: £20–35/day.
Indonesia (Bali + Beyond)
Bali needs little introduction but still delivers on price outside peak tourist areas. Canggu, Ubud, and the Gili Islands offer a range of experiences at very manageable costs. But don't stop at Bali — Lombok, the Komodo Islands, and Java are all remarkable and far less visited.
Budget: £25–45/day in Bali; less in other islands.
Getting there: Bali (Ngurah Rai) is served by direct flights from several European cities. Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Emirates all offer connecting options; compare thoroughly before booking.
Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur + Surrounds)
Kuala Lumpur is one of Southeast Asia's great underrated cities. The food scene — a mix of Malay, Chinese, and Indian cuisines — is extraordinary. The city is clean, well-connected, and affordable. Day trips to the Cameron Highlands or the beaches of the Perhentian Islands are easy from the capital.
AirAsia, based in KL, operates a massive network across the region, making onward travel cheap.
Budget: £25–45/day.
The Philippines
The Philippines is less visited by European travellers than Thailand or Vietnam, partly because of more complex logistics — it's an archipelago of over 7,000 islands. But for those who engage with it, the rewards are significant: Palawan (El Nido, Coron) is among the world's most beautiful island groups, and the diving in Tubbataha Reef is world-class.
Budget: £20–40/day.
Practical Tips for Southeast Asia
Travel in shoulder season. High season (November–February) brings the best weather to most of the region but also peak prices and crowds. April–May and September–October offer good conditions in many areas at lower costs.
Fly with Asian carriers. For long-haul, carriers like Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and Thai Airways frequently run promotions and offer better value than European full-service airlines on these routes.
Use budget carriers within the region. AirAsia, VietJet, and Cebu Pacific make intra-regional travel very affordable once you've arrived.
AirHuntr tracks deals on long-haul routes to Asia, including Southeast Asian destinations. Check our deals page for current promotions.
